Do we have time for war now?
In these dramatic days of our existence, we must ask ourselves if it’s not time for the world leaders to sit down together and evaluate the total situation on earth. We have ONE PLANET, not a planet B, as Al Gore so aptly put it. In other words, there is no reserve land to resort to.
Therefore, we must use all our joint efforts to save the planet. Let’s for a moment skip the question of empathy and compassion with the sufferings of all our victims of war. For many leaders of states such pain and death does not really affect them. Fortunately most of our European heads of states, really feel the despair, shock and tragic loss of lives, by the people of Ukraine.
The hard realities outside the battle ground.
Let us instead consider only the harsh realities, factual and cynical, – which concern our overall existence on earth. Can we really afford to waste precious time waging war in 2022?
Earth’s deadly battle against our way of life.
According to the United Nations Climate Panel, we are well on our way to the 2.7 degree goal of global warming. Already now, at just over a degree of rise, ie 1.1 ° C, we have violent and devastating floods, sea level rise, more powerful and considerably more devastating storms and hurricanes than before.
We have intense heat waves, increasing forest fires, and extreme weather, both in cold waves and heat waves. (NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies. By Sofie Bates, NASA’s Earth Science News Team, with Michael Carlowicz.)
California, Australia, Germany and several other areas were hit extremely hard by extreme weather last year. There will only be more such disasters in the future anyway.
What kind of scenarios should our war be waged against now.
I had a (naive) dream.
In a 2017 article, in which I described man’s nocturnal dream activity, I quoted from one of my dreams, where I on a guided tourist visit in the Kremlin, happened to end up at a summit with Putin, Trump, Medvedev and Lavrov. Having lost my group I suddenly was confronted by security guards and shortly after President Putin questioning my presence at this extremely important summit between heads of state.
I said I represented his small neighboring country Norway, and we had a suggestion for Russia with huge positive economic and human consequences. The plan was to include Russia into the NATO alliance, to ensure mutual peace, and to save much-needed money for welfare, public goods and the fight against poverty.
Both Putin and Trump completely agreed with this naive dream, but Putin insisted that the defense pact should be called NARTO. In the dream, I forgot China on the move, and how important it is for China not to lose Russia as an ally. So in the dream, I should definitely have included China in the defense alliance and called it NARCTO (North Atlantic, Russian and Chinese Treaty Organization.) Ref. My meeting with Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump in the Kremlin, Moscow.
Every individual with any brain intact….
Every sensible person understands that we can not continue along with the typical shooting, bombing and killing each other to capture land we feel entitled to occupy and annex, a way of imperialism the east and the west have ravaged for the last centuries.
We need a completely different defense for the present and the future. A green, – but not military-green defense against the globe’s desperate way of defending itself, when it feels threatened as it is now. It’s the war on climate-damaging actions and emissions that we must fight together. The war against our wanting for more and more material goods, polluting worldwide travels, and not only one car, but several. Not to mention all the plastic pollution we constantly surround ourselves with, which dissolves into micro plastics everywhere.
The earth as a schoolyard.
Had the earth been a schoolyard with 700 students and 7 of them were very outspoken and violent, would we never let the seven destroyers be ravaged by the remaining 700 students. Would we, knowing too well that the remaining 693 students were terrorized everyday and experienced the schooldays like hell, and the schoolyard rammed.
It’s not that simple in international politics! Here the global balance of power and the economy are in complicated ways woven into various agreements and alliances. So if someone reacts to an aggressor, and at the same time has nuclear weapons, it can be extremely difficult to stop the behavior, with a common condemnation and joint action against the abuser, We see this clearly in the UN Security Council today.
Today, nobody really wins a war.
Several political scientists believe that war is largely a solid loss project for those involved. Russian human rights veteran Svetlana Gannusjkina believes that no one wins a war, least of all the attacker. (Newspaper Klassekampen 15.3 2022)
What is believed to be a tragedy?
She also thinks it says a lot about a certain leader, whose name she never mentions, that he means the greatest tragedy that happened in the last century was the dissolution of the Soviet Union. – Then World War I, and World War II, and the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, was no tragedy, she wonders. For our part, we can add to the 90 million soldiers, children, women and men who have died in war since 1939.
Global economy and global climate.
Heads of state around the world are well aware of the global economy and trade knowing no borders anymore. The same goes for the climate and our global weather systems. These two worldwide systems, climate and economy are closely intertwined. We must use this knowledge for what its worth.
Now we need a defense pact to be formed between all the major countries of the North and South, East and West. This united pact or treaty is the only way to protect us from deadly attacks from our planet’s climate and weather systems. The planet is not ours, as an object or thing that we own, and can ravage or exploit as it suits us.
No, on the contrary! We are fortunate enough to live here on earth and enjoy its generosity with us. That is something we should show our gratitude for, through our ability to live in peace with it.
The earth has started waging war against us, in our lack of respect for its ecosystems.
In recent years, however, we have seen that the earth’s patience with us is at a breaking point. Then it is said by heads of state and leading economists, that we can not afford to take care of the earth by pursuing environmental protection. The reality is that we cannot afford not to.
“TOWARDS A NEW WORLD PACT”
We should not let a few grumpy, old men who for some reason feel offended by something in the past, rule the present world for the rest of us.
Nor should we let the military-industrial political complex in the world run errands for conflict, in order to achieve political and economic gain.
The bullies, and the most dangerous of us.
Most men are actually peaceful. Only 6% of the world’s male population harass, torments, beats and rapes women. This is more than enough unfortunately. Some very few are apt to kill.
The most dangerous of us, however, never seek help for their traumas. They most often hide their pain from a tragic background. Instead they try to compensate their deeper inferiority complex by seeking power in a family setting, big business or in a political organization, always heading for the top to get the ultimate and grandiose feeling of themselves.
Fortunately there are quite many nice and friendly leaders as well. This total majority of constructive, friendly men, but also women, counts billions.
To all world leaders and the rest of us who want to contribute to peace:
Stop war against each other! Let’s unite in a struggle for peace with the earth we live on. We must not stir it up any more. If we do, it will fight back in an environmental war against us that will kill millions of people, create huge refugee flows and change the livelihoods of most people.
Only a few had anticipated the war against Ukraine.
Just a few people in the world from the international surveillance service and their heads of state thought that Russia would go to war against Ukraine. Even fewer thought that war would turn out to be that brutal.
A few of the world’s leaders still do not believe in man-made climate problems. I hope “The World’s Pact Of Defense” can become a reality, and gradually replace the military alliances. “The World’s Pact Of Defense”(TWPOD) must gather all heads of state together with the others, and talk about different climate scenarios on which, among other things, the IPCC — Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, has validated data and projections.
Cost and benefit.
Through their work it must be taken into account what costs in the short and long term a green shift entails, and how to distribute the bill among the countries. The calculation must also be set up against what the environmental disasters will cost us.
Then it is important to set the above accounts against what you can save on massive military expenses, through mutual disarmament. Spending vast budgets om military armament based on the old paradigm, – to defend humanity against it’s aggression towards itself, – is so obsolete.
In the aftermath of the present war.
When Kremlins war against Ukraine is over, of course we must all in some way or another, help rebuilding their country and mending their deep wounds.
Then it’s time to reassess what all the world’s nations stand up against: The necessity to defend the human race against destroying itself through the earth’s war against us.
This is another kind of war, a climatic war that the earth must wage on us to take care of and balance its ecosystems. This is and will be our pending battle for survival. We can no longer fight each other. It’s stupid, old-fashioned and should belong to the unenlightened past.
